The Mandola

The Mandola, sometimes called the Octave Mandolin, is exactly that; a larger instrument, strung as a mandolin but tuned exactly one octave lower. It has had only limited succcess. Since it lacks the ringing clarity of a standard mandolin it does not stand out against other instruments and works best in a support role. It is however rich and melodious in tone, fun to play, and a great addition to a string group.
