Setup and Adjustment

John in shop

Adjustment is absolutely critical to how well the instrument can be played. The height of the strings above the fingerboard is crucial and even varies a little depending on the style of music that the performer is intending to use with this instrument.

In the Viol family the position and weight of the bridge, the position of the sound-post, and even the shape of the fingerboard all have subtle effects on the voicing of the instrument.

The scale shown here measures the string height in 1/100ths of an inch showing 11/100ths or just under 1/8th of an inch height at the sound-hole.
