The Flat Backed Mandolin

Flat Backed Mandolin

The flat-backed mandolin became popular on the early part of the last century. Most notably it was much more simple (and therefore cheaper) to build than the old Neaolitan style. Musicly it is quite successful; it is slightly louder than the original particularly in the upper register which makes it ring out well, though it is also slightly less melodic than its predecessor. Some makers added a slight arch to the face and the back to help it stand the added tension of heavier (louder) strings.
