The Bavarian Zither

Bavarian Zither

The Bavarian Zither predates the popular zithers but was ignored by the 'proper young lady' market because it required too much skill to play. It requires the left hand to finger the melody and some chord notes (which the right thumb plucks) while the right-hand fingers reach out over the harp portion to find two more octaves of bass notes. It can therefore be played in any key, major or minor. Listen to the theme music for the movie "The Third Man"
